New Assistant Principal for Hillside School named at Board of Education meeting

The appointment of a new Assistant Principal at the Hillside Intermediate School was approved by the Bridgewater-Raritan Regional School District on Tuesday, March 26.

Jacquelyn Ciurleo was named to replace the retiring Marc Hungarter as Hillside’s new Assistant Principal, effective July  1, during the Board of Education’s public meeting that evening at the Wade Administration Building.

She will work with Hillside Principal Dr. Tali Axelrod, who was present at the Board of Education meeting Tuesday evening when she offered her congratulations to Ms. Ciurleo.

While Ms. Ciurleo will begin a new role, she is a familiar name in the school district.

Ms. Ciurleo has worked in the Bridgewater-Raritan Regional School District for 23 years, serving the past 11 years as the Elementary Teaching Specialist at the John. F. Kennedy Primary School. She  previously taught 1st Grade at John. F. Kennedy for 12 years.

Ms. Ciurelo, who came to Bridgewater-Raritan after teaching 1st Grade in the Livingston School District for six years, prepared for her new challenge.

“I am excited to transition to an administrative role with the Bridgewater-Raritan School District at Hillside Intermediate School as Assistant Principal. I am committed to working with Dr. Axelrod to ensure  that every member of the Hillside School community feels valued, supported, and empowered.”

She added:

“ I have built strong relationships that support my work with students and staff,” Ms. Ciurleo said. “ I am excited to work alongside Dr. Axelrod and contribute to the leadership team in supporting all staff, students, and families.”

In another matter during the meeting, a representative from the New Jersey School Boards Association delivered a presentation that focused on the ethics for the school's  board of education.

Gwen Thornton, who has been a frequent visitor to the Bridgewater-Raritan Regional School District this year, is the Field Service Representative who serves Somerset County and Hunterdon County for the New Jersey School Boards Association.

She produced a video report that touched on various areas that included the goals, objectives, responsibilities and restrictions that school officials must follow.

Ms. Thornton was the facilitator for the three Strategic Planning meetings that the school district held this winter at the Bridgewater-Raritan Middle School.

In other business, the  district calendar for the 2025-2026 school year was approved. That calendar can be viewed by visiting the school district’s website at:
