High school's Unified Basketball Team honored at Board of Edcuation meeting

The team that captured the hearts of the Bridgewater-Raritan Regional School District were applauded for the final time this year.

The Bridgewater-Raritan High School Unified Basketball Team was honored for their dream season by the Bridgewater-Raritan Regional School District Board of Education on the evening of Tuesday, March 12.

The conference room at the Wade Administration Building overflowed with team members, who were  joined by their coaches, families and friends.

The 35-student team, in just its second year of existence, finished with a 7-3 record–a major leap from last year’s 1-5 record—and advanced to the semifinal round of the state tournament.

Bridgewater-Raritan had won four state tournament games before its season came to a close with a 31-26 defeat to Hunterdon Central Regional High School in the state semifinals on February 24 in Vaughn Stapleton Gymnasium. Hunterdon Central went on to win the state championship.

Superintendent Bob Beers  spoke about the team’s success and how “no one left a game unhappy.”

Board of Education President Barry Walker read the official proclamation while the captive audience listened with pride.

Both Superintendent Beers and President Walker then handed out certificates to the team’s students who were in attendance.

Cynthia Wong, the Unified Basketball Team’s dedicated head coach and her assistants ,Chris Osborn, Leslie Thompson and Rhonda Fishburn, were also on hand during the lively ceremony.
