As a district, we are approaching summer reading a bit differently this year. Hopefully, this short letter will explain our philosophy and answer any questions you may have after viewing our “A Summer of Reading Adventure” flyer.
We welcome all of our students, K-12, and their families to join in this adventure! We embrace the philosophy that “Reading is essential for those who seek to rise above the ordinary” - Jim Rohn, and that “Books are uniquely portable magic” - Stephen King. It is our hope that every B-R student finds an adventure through literature this summer!
With the exception of those students enrolled in AP courses, which reflect and assess college-level expectations, B-R students will not be required to read books from any designated list this summer. We are encouraging all students and their parents/guardians to explore the resources we’ve linked on the flyer if some guidance is necessary in selecting books to read; however, it is not necessary to do so. Students in non-AP sections and their parents/guardians have complete choice over what books are read this summer!
Students registered for AP courses will have a list of recommended titles as determined by the AP teachers. For all other ELA courses K-12, there is no assignment associated with summer reading in 2019. We only ask that students arrive back to school in September having read and enjoyed at least one book. Of course, we would love to encourage reading more than one - and we are hoping that by giving students and parents the freedom to select
- which book(s),
- what format(s) (graphic novels/comics, fiction, nonfiction, biography, ebooks, audiobooks,
- newspapers/magazines...), and
- whether books are read independently or shared (parent/child, child/friend, peer group/book club),
We may not only achieve our goal of “A Summer of Reading Adventure,” but exceed it!
Please feel free to reach out to your child’s current teacher, or any of us directly, if you have any questions.
We wish you and yours a summer of adventure through reading!
